Slow Business Broadband and the BT Switch Off in 2025: What You Need to Know

Slow business broadband can be a major headache for any company. It can lead to lost productivity, missed opportunities, and frustrated employees. Unfortunately, slow broadband is a common problem for many businesses, and it's only going to get worse as the BT switch off approaches.

What is the BT switch off?

The BT switch off is the planned phase-out of the UK's traditional telephone network, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). This network has been in place for over 100 years and is now outdated. BT has announced that it will switch off the PSTN in 2025 and replace it with a new, all-IP (Internet Protocol) network.

What does this mean for businesses?

The switch off of the PSTN will have a significant impact on businesses that rely on traditional phone lines for their broadband connection. Many businesses still use ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) broadband, which relies on the PSTN to deliver the connection. When the PSTN is switched off, ADSL broadband will no longer be available.

Fibre-to-the-Premises

Fibre to the premises (FTTP) is a type of broadband connection that uses fibre optic cables to deliver high-speed internet directly to a property. This means that the connection is faster and more reliable than traditional copper-based connections, as it is not affected by distance from the exchange. FTTP is ideal for businesses that require fast and reliable internet connectivity for their operations.

Fibre-to-the-Cabinet

Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) is a type of broadband connection that uses fibre optic cables to connect a street cabinet to the exchange, and then uses traditional copper cables to deliver the connection to a property. This means that the connection is faster than traditional copper-based connections, but not as fast or reliable as Fibre to the premises (FTTP). FTTC is ideal for businesses that require a faster connection than traditional broadband, but do not require the high speeds and reliability of FTTP.

ADSL is ideal for very small companies with very little email and internet usage, however if you are considering collaborative features that are broadband hungry then you should really consider a more responsive product that will allow your business to operate in a dynamic way to maintain broadband speeds.
